Light Up Amber for Appendix Cancer 2023

#AmberforAppendixCancer is a nationwide landmark campaign that is designed to shine a light on this rare but increasingly prevalent cancer by illuminating landmarks nationwide.

Jump to Full List of Landmarks

The objective of this campaign is to shine a light on this rare but increasingly prevalent cancer by illuminating landmarks nationwide.

It is crucial to understand that often there are no symptoms of appendiceal cancer. And when there are symptoms, they are often missed or misdiagnosed as they frequently mimic those of hernias, ovarian or uterine masses, Crohn’s or other GI diseases, or are so vague that they are repeatedly dismissed. Meanwhile, the cancer progresses, making it all the more challenging to treat once it is finally properly diagnosed. In fact, a significantly large portion of cases of appendiceal cancer are not properly diagnosed until the disease has already perforated the appendix and tumors have spread throughout the abdomen. In those cases where patients present with symptoms of simple appendicitis, the appendiceal tumor can be missed, and the patient is sent home from the hospital with a prescribed course of antibiotics to treat. This is particularly relevant for adults over the age of 50 who might experience symptoms associated with appendicitis, as these symptoms in older patients are increasingly thought to signal a potential appendiceal tumor.

We encourage the community to share photos of the illuminated landmark on social media with the hashtags #AmberForAppendixCancer and #TurnAugustAmber and to
spread information about the importance of early detection and specialized care for appendix cancer. All photo submissions will be entered for raffle prizes at the end of August!

What is Appendix Cancer Awareness Month?

August is recognized as the official Appendix Cancer Awareness Month to increase awareness of this rare cancer and the need for MORE research to discover new treatments with the hope of one day finding a cure. The ACPMP Research Foundation was established in 2008 to fund research and education to improve the diagnosis and treatment of appendix cancer. As part of our educational efforts, ACPMP is excited to promote August as the official awareness month for appendix cancer.

Along with establishing amber as the official ribbon color for appendix cancer, having an established awareness month further enhances ACPMP’s critical mission. To that end, in August, ACPMP will produce programming throughout the month of August to raise awareness of appendix cancer to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with this rare and complex cancer that claims the lives of many every year. Each and every patient’s life is precious beyond measure. Appendiceal cancer is what claimed the lives of Audrey Hepburn, ESPN personality Stuart Scott, mystery author Sue Grafton, and just in June 2023, mystery author and avid ACPMP supporter, Carol Higgins Clark.

View all programming for the month of August here.

2023 Participating Landmarks:

Please check back frequently for updates. This is a fluid list, and lighting feasibility and confirmation is subject to change, especially concerning lighting technology.

Note: All lighting partners participating in this campaign will light in the Appendix Cancer Awareness ribbon color of amber. In the event of lighting limitations, yellow, gold, and/or orange will be used. August 1st is the primary light-up date to kick off Appendix Cancer Awareness Month, although some landmarks will light up on different days in August.

If you would like to join our campaign, please contact us.

If you would like to volunteer for future awareness, education, or fundraising efforts, please fill out this form.
