The PMP Research Foundation is now the Appendix Cancer / Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Research Foundation, or “ACPMP.”
In addition to changing the foundation’s name, we have also launched a new website and logo designed to represent the spectrum of conditions that fall under the appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei umbrella.
We decided to change the foundation’s name after hearing from patients and physicians who felt that the research and educational needs of the appendix cancer community were not being met. In fact, PMP typically arises as a secondary condition originating from a primary epithelial appendiceal neoplasm or appendiceal adenocarcinoma, so the vast majority of PMP patients are also appendix cancer patients. As such, we have been funding appendix cancer research and education since our inception. Our new name and logo better reflect the closely intertwined nature of these diseases and the foundation’s focus, which includes both appendix cancer and PMP.
Our mission continues to be (1) facilitating appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei patient and physician education, (2) issuing grants to fund promising research that will improve the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei, and (3) finding a cure for every patient diagnosed with pseudomyxoma peritonei and/or appendix cancer.
To date, we have awarded $850,000 in the form of 18 research grants that have resulted in 10 published studies in peer-reviewed journals with another $100,000 to be issued at the end of 2016. We have co-hosted and sponsored annual patient-physician symposiums from coast to coast across the United States, and awarded physician scholarships to major international medical and scientific conferences focused on the understanding and treatment of appendix cancer and PMP. We will continue these efforts as we pursue our goal of finding a cure for every patient diagnosed with appendix cancer and/or pseudomyxoma peritonei.
Thank you for being a part of our community. Welcome to ACPMP!
