ACPMP Research Foundation Illuminates Landmarks Nationwide for Appendix Cancer Awareness

The Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (ACPMP) Research Foundation, a national non-profit dedicated to funding research and education, and raising awareness of appendix cancer and Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP), is pleased to announce the lighting of landmarks nationwide in August in support of Appendix Cancer Awareness Month.

This initiative, aptly named “Light Up Amber for Appendix Cancer”, will see landmarks and buildings from Anchorage, Alaska to Niagra Falls, New York, adorned in amber lights, the official color of appendix cancer awareness. The main lighting will commence on August 1, 2023, with other lightings throughout the month of August.

The aim of this campaign is to shine a light on this rare but increasingly diagnosed cancer.

“We are grateful for the support from the community and all of the buildings and landmarks participating this year. This initiative is not just about illuminating a structure; it’s about casting a light on the lives affected by appendix cancer and the urgency of increased research and awareness,” said Deborah Shelton, Executive Director of the ACPMP Research Foundation.

It is crucial for the public to understand that the symptoms of appendix cancer often mimic those of appendicitis, hernias, ovarian masses, uterine masses, Crohn’s, or other GI diseases. This is particularly relevant for adults over the age of 50 who might experience symptoms akin to appendicitis, as they should be evaluated for an appendiceal mass. When not identified and treated in the early stages, appendix cancer can spread throughout the abdomen.

We encourage the community to share photos of the illuminated landmark on social media with the hashtags #AmberforAppendixCancer and #TurnAugustAmber and to spread information about the importance of early detection and specialized care for appendix cancer.

Those seeking more information about appendix cancer, upcoming events, or how to get involved can visit the ACPMP Research Foundation’s website at ACPMP.org.

The Foundation extends an invitation to local and national media outlets for interviews with ACPMP representatives, survivors, and healthcare professionals.
